For most home users, the hosts file can be deleted to solve this problem, but we advise you to make a backup of the file in case any problems arise. For office computers, there is an increased probability that there might be legitimate and important data in the hosts file so you should take particular care before modifying it. Most likely any important data would be at the top of the file.

The location of the hosts file depends on your operating system:

General search:
Find items where two or more keywords are all present.

Specific Search phrase (exact phrase):
Find items containing certain words in a specific order.
Command: Place the search phrase in quotation marks.
Search Example: “hard drive”
Returns: Items with titles containing hard drive, but not those just containing hard, drive or drive hard.

Exclude certain terms (not):
Find items that don’t contain a certain word.
Command: Place a minus sign immediately before the word to be excluded (no spaces).
Search Example: hard drive -ide
Returns: Items with titles containing the words hard drive but not containing the word ide

Find either of two terms (or):
Find items where one word or another is present.
Command: Enter keywords in parentheses separated by commas (no spaces).
Search Example: (hitachi, seagate)
Returns: Items whose titles contain the words hitachi or seagate

Exclude several terms (not or):
Find items that don’t contain several words.
Command: Place a minus sign before the list of words separated by commas and in parentheses (no spaces).
Search Example: Computer case -(black,green,red)
Returns: Items with titles containing the word computer and case but not containing black, green or red.

Find terms that contain any variation of a phrase (wildcards):
Find items that contain words starting with a particular sequence of letters.
Command: Enter the letter sequence followed by an asterisk.
Search Example: Cyber* DSC*
Returns: Items whose titles contain words starting with “DSC,” such as DSC-S40, DSC-T33, and DSC-W7, as well as words starting with “Cyber,” including Cybershot and Cyber-shot.
